Robert Berens
Rob is one of our founding partners and a highly accomplished and experienced financial planner with a passion for helping individuals and families achieve their financial goals. With over 20 years of experience in the financial industry, Rob has gained extensive knowledge and expertise in creating comprehensive financial plans tailored to his clients' unique circumstances.
Rob holds a Masters degree in Financial Planning as well as several other certifications. These qualifications attest to his dedication to staying current with the latest developments and regulations in the financial world, enabling him to provide the most relevant and up-to-date advice to his clients. Rob has also been instrumental in developing financial wellness programs for employees of many corporate organisations here in Australia as well as being involved in many speaking engagements within the industry.
Rob’s expertise lies in evidence-based investing, a rigorous and data-driven approach that combines academic research with real-world investment practices. He believes in a disciplined and long-term investment strategy, focusing on low-cost, diversified portfolios designed to capture market returns efficiently.
What sets Rob apart is his ability to demystify complex financial concepts and communicate them in a clear and concise manner. He provides his clients with the knowledge and understanding necessary to make informed decisions about their financial future. Rob’s warm and empathetic nature fosters strong relationships built on trust and transparency, ensuring that his clients feel comfortable discussing their financial concerns and aspirations.
When Rob is not assisting clients with their financial plans, he enjoys spending time with his family, travel, surfing, golf, and music.
Simon Gabbie
Simon started his own financial planning business in 2005 and joined forces with Robert Berens in 2010. Together they started Brisbane Private Wealth in 2013.
Simon has an Advanced Diploma of Financial Services with over 22 years’ experience in the industry. He is a Practitioner Member of the Financial Advice Association of Australia and an Associate Member of the Self Managed Super Fund Association.
Early in Simon’s career, he worked for a Chartered Accounting firm in Sydney which gave him a solid grounding in tax planning and the use of structures including family trusts, companies and self-managed superannuation funds.
Outside the office, Simon enjoys cooking (can knock up a sensational Pistachio-Crusted Rack of Lamb) and is always scheming where to travel next for a new adventure.
Helen Baker
Helen is a qualified, practising, and licenced financial adviser and founder of On Your Own Two Feet, an Australian-wide service dedicated to empowering women to gain and retain financial freedom. Helen has two Masters degrees, one in Financial Planning and the other in Management – Innovation and change, as well as a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) degree. Helen has also achieved outstanding results in her professional studies, being recognised by winning the 2015 Kaplan National Subject Award for Estate and Succession planning and has now completed the Financial Adviser Standards and Ethics Authority (FASEA) exam, which is the latest standard in the financial services industry.
Helen was recently awarded Godfrey Pembroke Group’s Adviser of the Year and is a finalist for Australia’s financial adviser/planner of the Year, and a two-time finalist for women’s community contribution, ‘for her outstanding work across community and charity and her endeavours to improve financial literacy for those who need it most’.
Her book On Your Own Two Feet: steady steps to Women’s financial independence was first published in 2014. Her second book, On Your Own Two Feet, divorce: your survive and thrive financial guide, published in 2018, was named by the highly respected Money Magazine’s Book of the Month in December 2018. Helen is a regular panellist talking about money matters on all major Australian and New Zealand television stations, and her expert opinions are regularly sought-after by national radio, magazines, newspapers and online.
Rob Chester
Rob is a Senior Financial Adviser, and has worked in the financial services industry since 2006, gaining experience both on home soil and overseas. Joining our team as a Paraplanner in 2013, Rob began transitioning to his current advisory role in 2014.
Rob has completed Bachelor of Business and Advanced Diploma in Financial Services. He is instrumental in delivering strategic solutions to his clients and prides himself on high standards of professionalism and service.
Rob has a genuine passion for the wealth management industry and making a meaningful impact in his client’s lives. Financial planning is unique to each individual and is about more than numbers. Helping clients focus on what’s important, so they can get on with doing the things they love. That’s what it’s all about.
Outside the office, Rob enjoys spending time with his family and getting outdoors.
Stephanie Dow
Stephanie has been an integral part of our practice since 2011, starting as a Financial Planning Assistant and progressing to become our Practice Manager. With her Master of Business Administration and Diploma in Financial Planning, she brings a strong academic foundation to her role.
In her position as Practice Manager, Stephanie takes charge of the team's day-to-day operations, ensuring that our clients enjoy a seamless experience from their initial contact to maintaining an ongoing relationship with our firm. She accomplishes this by streamlining administrative processes, implementing efficient internal procedures, and staying up-to-date with industry innovations to deliver optimal outcomes for our clients.
Outside of work, Stephanie enjoys travelling, spending time outdoors, reading, and spending time with family and friends.
Stephanie's expertise, dedication, and commitment make her a valuable asset to our practice, driving our success and ensuring exceptional service for our clients at every stage of their journey.
Jessica Beresford
Jess has been working in the Financial Services industry since 2007 and has completed her Diploma in Financial Planning. She started as an enthusiastic receptionist with a firm in Gladstone and quickly progressed to Personal Assistant to the Senior Financial Adviser. Jess is enjoying her current role as Client Service Manager and is always ready to help.
Jess has a detailed knowledge of the ins and outs of our industry and can assist clients with queries or concerns they may have. Ensuring the client has an easy, stress-free experience is one of Jess’s goals, and she does this with a friendly attitude and a smile on her face.
In her spare time, Jess loves spending time with her family, going to the beach, and enjoying a good meal!
Chloe Mcpherson
Chloe has an Advanced Diploma in Financial Services (Financial Planning) and has worked in the industry since 2004. Chloe joined the team in 2018 as one of our Paraplanners. She is fundamental in delivering strategic results-orientated plans that are in the client’s best interest.
She works from her home in Central Queensland, where she lives with her husband and two children.
When not working, you can find Chloe cooking, reading, and making memories with her family.
Peter Lee
Peter has a Bachelor of Commerce majoring in Accounting and Financial Planning and has been in the Financial Services Industry since 2011. Peter joined the team in June 2019 as a paraplanner and is instrumental in delivering strategic solutions to our clients and has a genuine passion for helping others achieve financial freedom.
Outside of the office, Peter is a sports fanatic and enjoys getting together with friends on weekends as well as getting out on the water fishing.
Janet Joseph
Janet is a member of our paraplanning team with a Graduate Certificate of Applied Finance, an Advanced Diploma in Financial Services and over 25 years of experience in the financial services industry.
Janet has worked in the Financial Planning sector in a range of roles - Client Service Assistant, Associate Adviser, Compliance Officer and Paraplanner – all with a focus on the administrative and technical aspects of providing sound financial advice. Amongst the things Janet enjoys most in her work are the challenges of framing guidance and strategies provided by our financial advisers in terms that meet the stringent regulatory requirements and “make sense” to our clients
In her spare time, Janet loves being outdoors doing gardening, unwinding on long walks in the country, or just lounging in the shade with a good book. She also enjoys the theatre and is learning to play the piano again after a long break.
Dr Steve Garth
Dr Steve Garth is the Principal of Principia Investment Consultants.
Steve provides his expertise and experience in areas such as policymaking, planning, asset allocation, implementation and the evaluation of investment strategies and investment managers.
For nearly two decades, he played a key role in helping grow the Australian arm of global asset manager Dimensional Fund Advisors. During his career he managed Australian and global equity portfolios, managed the Asia Pacific trading team, and oversaw the introduction of direct market access trading. For the last 10 years at Dimensional he specialized in managing the firm’s fixed interest and credit strategies.
Before joining Dimensional in 2001, Steve was on the faculty of the University of New South Wales. His teaching and research interests were in optical fiber technology and quantitative finance.
Steve received his PhD in Applied Mathematics from the Australian National University. He also holds a BSc in Mathematics and Physics, a BA with majors in History and Politics, and holds a Masters of Applied Finance (MAppFin). As well, he has a Graduate Diploma in Business Administration.
Steve is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
